What Moves Us
“Our father lost his battle with lung cancer in 2016. Walking every year with Free to Breathe is one of the ways we keep his memory alive. He’s our inspiration!”
— Cinzia Pelletier & Patsy Iacono, Brooklyn, NY
“My first Free to Breathe walk was in 2011, after my uncle lost his 10-month battle with lung cancer. Our family history with lung cancer spans 5 generations, and my mother will celebrate 20 years as a lung cancer survivor in 2018. I’m motivated to do more every year and my actions are becoming a lifetime of impact on saving lives and increasing survival.”
— Shawn Shinn, Dallas, TX
About Lung Cancer
Lung cancer is a malignant tumor that forms in the tissues of the lungs, usually in the cells lining air passages. Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) are the two main types of lung cancer. Treatment options vary depending on the type and stage of lung cancer, but can include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and/or targeted therapy.
If you have lungs, you can get lung cancer.
Lung cancer is often diagnosed in a late stage, at which point it is difficult to treat. More research devoted to early detection and prevention will be key to diagnosing and treating lung cancer in its early stages, when there is a far greater likelihood of success.
